Common Causes of Tripped Breakers
A loose circuit is usually the most common causes of a tripped breaker. Usually, this can be resolved by tightening the connections but you must never attempt to tighten, remove or replace a breaker on your own. Having an experienced electrician do this is the safest way to fix a loose circuit.
If your breaker continues to trip after it has been reset, do not ignore it and keep resetting it. That is usually a sign that your breaker is trying to tell you something is wrong. Our certified electricians can help find the root cause of why your breaker keeps tripping.
Causes of a Breaker Trip:
- Circuit Overload
- Short Circuit
- Ground Fault
- Aging Breaker (older than 15 years)
By design, circuit breakers are the weakest point on an electrical circuit because they will fail before anything else does. Any time that a circuit starts to pull too much power or endangers the devices on that circuit, the breaker box will trip. This protects your home from overloaded circuits and electrical shorts on the line.
Consider replacing your fuse box if you notice any of these conditions:
- There is corrosion evident around the fuse box or its cover.
- Breakers from numerous different brands are installed (look for assorted colors or manufacturer labels).
- Rusting is visible anywhere in the fuse box.
Breakers do more than just protect your appliances. They can protect the wiring in your home from heavy currents that can lead to electrical fires. Have one of our certified electricians test and inspect your wiring before upgrading or replacing your circuit breaker.
If your fuse box is manufactured by Federal Pacific (FPE) or Zinsco, it may need to be replaced immediately. If you are not sure what type of brand your fuse box is, give us a call and we can answer any questions you have!
